PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Periodontal disease is a microbial infection of the supporting
tissue around the teeth. It is a silent, progressive disease that,
if left untreated, can cause you to lose your teeth. In fact
periodontal infection is the number one cause of tooth loss.
The infection is the result of two events: 1) Plaque, which
consist of about 80% bacteria and 20% food particles, binds to
tooth. 2) As plaque matures it releases toxins causing the body's
immune system to release enzymes. These enzymes initiate an inflammatory
response, a protective mechanism, trying to isolate and remove the
bacterial assault. Unfortunately these same enzymes will also
destroy collagen( tissue) and bone.
The pathogenic microorganism associated with this infections are
also a major risk factor in many systemic diseases. Every time you
swallow, bacteria from the mouth will start to travel through the
bloodstream and all the major organs. These organism are associated
with heart disease, stroke, stomach ulcer, diabetes, and pre-term
low birth weight babies, just to name a few.
When we treat the infection we need to treat it internally
(systemically) and externally (in the mouth) at the same time.
We treat the inside with Nutraceuticals called Perio Therapy. We
also prescribe Ortho Care to stop bone loss. (Both of these
supplement contain herbal ingredients only.) These nutraceutical
inhibit the release of toxins by the pathogens and release of
enzymes by the body, thus eliminating the inflammatory process and
strengthening the immune system.
In order to treat the infection from the outside it is necessary
that we carry out a series of appointments. Several treatments are scheduled a week to ten days apart.
These
appointments are an hour long during which we disinfect the
pockets. We use a micro sonic scaler and antibacterial irrigation.
It is important to retreat with scaling and irrigating frequently
to halt the repopulation of the pockets with bacteria. We will be
taking plaque samples from your mouth to monitor our progress on
the phase microscope. You are also guided to do the best possible
homecare regimen: proper use of electric brush, correct flossing,
use of the Hydro Floss and selection of the appropriate
toothpaste and rinse.
When the activity on the monitor is acceptable, the bleeding
points are eliminated and your overall oral hygiene is improved,
we know to stop the treatment and start to concentrate on aiding
you to keep the health of your mouth.
